5x7 photograph of the balllerina shown in a graceful ballet pose from Swan Lake
Photograph signed: "Alexandra/Danilova/1992". B/w, 5x7 overall, image 4½x5½ (one surface). Photograph by Maurice Seymour, Chicago (imprint at lower left). Depicted in Swan Lake. Russian-born ballerina Alexandra Danilova (1903-1997), who studied at the Imperial School in St. Petersburg, joined the Mariinsky troupe in 1921 and was promoted to soloist a year later. A dancer for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes (1924-1929), Basil's Ballets Russes (1933-1938) and Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (1938-1952), she toured with her own group, Great Moments of Ballet, from 1954-1956. One of the most popular dancers of her time, Danilova danced all the major ballerina roles and created principal roles in a number of works, including The Triumph of Neptune (1926), Le Bal (1928), Dances concertantes (1944) and La sonnambula (1946), and was a guest dancer with Saddler's Wells Ballet (1949) and London Festival Ballet (1951). A teacher at the American Ballet from 1964-1989, she published her autobiography, Choura (her nickname), in 1986, the year she received the Handel Medallion in New York. Danilova was also a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989. Stray ink blot at the "A" of Alexandra. Slightly creased at blank corners. Name written (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
