ALFORD J. WILLIAMS
1929 air mail dispatched from Camden Airport on its opening day, signed by Alford J. Williams, who helped develop dive bombing
Commemorative envelope signed "Al Williams/Wash/DC". 6½x3¾ air mail envelope. This envelope bears a stamp certifying that it was dispatched with air mail leaving Camden Airport in Camden, New Jersey on its opening day. Postmarked Camden, New Jersey, Sept. 21, 1929. Addressedto E. D. MacLennan, Cleveland, Ohio. Three stamps affixed. Aviation pioneer Williams (1896-1958) broke the world air speed record on Nov. 4, 1923, while he was a U. S. Navy test pilot. He attained a speed of 267.16 miles-per-hour in a Curtis R2C-1 racing plane. He also made the first solo flight from Hawaii the United States mainland. But his real contribution came during the 1930s, when he helped develop dive bombing, an important bombing tactic that was used extensively and to great effect during World War II. He left the U. S. Marines in 1941 after advocating an independent Air Force and joined the Army Air Corp, the forerunner of the U. S. Air Force, where he trained pilots in dive bombing. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Normal postal stamps, which touch signature. Paper loss and adhesive residue under flap on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
