Handwritten sentiment of the English Poet Laureate, from the close of
a letter
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Believe me/yours very
sincerely/Alfred Austin/Nov. 20. 1881", 4¼x4, affixed to a 7x4½ sheet. Ink
caption (unknown hand) in lower right. Alfred Austin (1835-1913), who
later edited the "National Review", followed Lord Tennyson as Poet Laureate
of England (1896-1913). Major themes in his poetry include a love of nature
and strong patriotism. Austin had first came to prominence with The
Season: A Satire (1861). In 1870, he wrote The Poetry of the
Period, a criticism that attacked Tennyson and other poets of the day.
Toned. Ink light but legible. Ink marks (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine
condition.
