Reiner", "Jean Stapleton", Color 8x10. Stage, screen and television actress
JEAN STAPLETON (1923-2013) is best known for her role as Edith Bunker,
aka "Dingbat", in the popular TV sitcom, All in the Family (1971-1980).
Although the Emmy Award-winning "Edith" opened the show each week
with a screeching rendition of "Those Were the Days", Stapleton not only
possessed a lilting, well-modulated singing voice, but she was far from a
"dingbat" in real life. She endeared herself to Broadwayites with her
wistfully funny characterizations in the SRO musicals Damn Yankees,
Bells Are Ringing and Funny Girl, roles that she would carry over
into the film versions of these hits. Most of her onscreen work could be
found in New York-based movies (Something Wild, Up the Down
Staircase and Klute) and TV series (Car 54, Where Are You?,
The Defenders and The Patty Duke Show). Stapleton has also made a
number of other feature films, including You've Got Mail (1998), and has
been a guest star on a number of other TV shows. Stage, screen and television
actor CARROLL O' CONNOR (1925-2001) is best known for his role as
Archie Bunker on All in the Family, televised on CBS from 1971-1979,
for which he won four Emmy Awards. The first situation comedy to deal
openly with bigotry, prejudice and politics, All in the Family was the
number one show in the Nielsen ratings during its first five seasons and
continued as Archie Bunker's Place (1979-1983). O'Connor won a
fifth Emmy for his portrayal of Sheriff William "Bill" O. Gillespie in the
TV series, In the Heat of the Night (1988-1994), in which his
adopted son, actor Hugh O'Connor, also appeared. Over his 50-year acting career,
O'Connor also starred in a number of feature films, including Parrish
(1961), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), Cleopatra (1963), In
Harm's Way (1965), What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966),
Hawaii (1966) and In the Heat of the Night (1988), as well as
made-for-television movies, and he was a guest star on a number of TV series.
Multi-talented ROB REINER (b. 1947) has one of Hollywood's more remarkable
careers, having gone from celebrity's son to comedy writer to TV actor to
one of Hollywood's most successful producers and directors. He is the son of
comedy giant Carl Reiner. Rob co-founded the improvisational comedy troupe The
Session and then became a comedy writer for such shows as The Smothers
Brothers' Comedy Hour. Reiner starred as Mike Stivic, Archie Bunker's
son-in-law on All in the Family (1971-1978), taking two Emmys before he
left. He then turned to directing films; some of which include Stand By
Me (1986), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990), A
Few Good Men (Best Picture Oscar nomination, 1993) and Ghosts of
Mississippi (1996). Reiner has also continued to act in films. Stage, screen
and television actress Sally Struthers (born in 1948) is best known
for her role as Gloria Bunker Stivic on All in the Family. Televised
on CBS from 1971-1979, Family was the first situation comedy to deal
openly with bigotry, prejudice and politics, and it was the number one show
in the Nielsen ratings during its first five seasons. Struthers, who left
the series after seven seasons, had made her television debut as a dancer in
a Herb Alpert special and had later appeared as a regular on The Smothers
Brothers Comedy Hour (1967) and The Tim Conway Comedy Hour
(1970), and she had stolen scenes in the 1970 feature film, Five Easy
Pieces. After All in the Family, Struthers appeared in several
feature films, including The Getaway (1972), made her Broadway
debut in Wally's Cafe (1981, directed by former Family co-star Rob
Reiner), and did voice work for a number of series, including
Dinosaurs (1991-1994, as the voice of teen-aged daughter, Charlene
Sinclair). Struthers also had her own short-lived series, Gloria
(1992-1993), the final spin-off of All in the Family, made several
appearances on Archie Bunker's Place (another Family spin-off)
and she has been seen as Babette Dell on Gilmore Girls since 2000.
Struthers was also the spokesperson for the Christian Children's Fund for
many years. Fine condition.
