ANNIE GET YOUR GUN PLAY CAST
Showbill for the 1966 revival, signed by Ethel Merman, Jerry Orbach
and Benay Venuta on their biography pages, and on the cast page by Danny Daniels
(Orbach and Venuta have signed again there!)
Show Bill signed: "Ethel/Merman", "Benay Venuta"
(twice), "Jerry Orbach" (twice), "Danny Daniels", 16
pages, 9x12. Lincoln Center program for a revival of Annie Get Your Gun
(1966), signed by Merman on her full-page biography, by Venuta and Orbach by
their images on biography pages, and by Daniels on the cast page (where Venuta
and Orbach have both signed a second time). Possessing one of the richest,
most powerful voices in the history of theater, ETHEL MERMAN (1908-1984), born
Ethel Agnes Zimmerman, became known as the "First Lady" of American musical
comedy as she strutted her way across the stage during five decades of
show-business success, beginning with her breakout in 1930's Girl Crazy
and continuing on to memorable parts in Anything Goes, Annie Get Your
Gun and Gypsy. "I Got Rhythm" fromGirl
Crazyand"There's No Business Like Show Business"
fromAnnie Get Your Gunbecame her trademark
songs. She originated the role of Annie Oakley in the latter production
(1946-1949), reprising it two decades later in the show offered here. In
1960, JERRY ORBACH (1935-2004) created the role of flamboyant interlocutor El
Gallo in the long-running off-Broadway smash The Fantasticks; the show
closed in 2002. He has since starred in such Broadway productions as
Carnival (1961), revivals of Guys and Dolls (1965) and Annie
Get Your Gun (1966), Promises Promises (1968), 6 Rms Riv Vu
(1972), Chicago (1975) and 42nd Street (1980). He was nominated
for Tony Awards for his roles in Guys and Dolls and Chicago,
winning the 1969 Tony Award for Best Actor (Musical) in Promises,
Promises. Starting with 1985's Brewster's Millions, the actor
managed to show up in at least one movie per year. Orbach's more fondly
remembered screen roles include the part of Jennifer Grey's father in Dirty
Dancing (1987), the voice of Lumiere, the candelabra, in the Oscar winning
animated feature Beauty and the Beast (1990) and Billy Crystal's easily
amused agent in Mr. Saturday Night (1992). Orbach was nominated for an
Emmy for his role as NYPD Detective Lennie Briscoe on Law and Order
(1992-2004). He reprised his role as Briscoe in early episodes of Law and
Order: Trial By Jury (2005) filmed before his death of prostate cancer in
New York on December 28, 2004. Singer, dancer, actress BENAY VENUTA
(1911-1995) made her first film appearance in Trail of '98 (1928).
Her Broadway debut came when she replaced Ethel Merman as Reno Sweeney
in Cole Porter's Anything Goes (1935). Venuta and Merman became
friends, and appeared together in a revival of Annie Get Your Gun
(1966). She was slated to star as Earle Stanley Gardner's detective Bertha
Cool on a television series, but only the 1958 pilot was ever made. Venuta
played Jean Smart's mother, Ellen Stillfield, on Designing Women
(1986-1991). DANNY DANIELS (b. 1927) first stepped onto a Broadway stage
as a dancing boy in Best Foot Forward (1941). After five more on-stage
roles in musical comedies, concluding with Kiss Me Kate, Daniels became a
choreograph and stage music director, filling these functions over for decades
from All American (1962) to If You Ever Leave Me, I'm Going With
You (2001). Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
