Beverly Sills, John Stewart, and Pablo Elvira sign a program for
La Traviata.
Program signed: "Love Beverly Sills", "John Stewart" and
"Pablo Elvira Jr", 64p, 8½x10¾. "Performing Arts", program of the New
York City Opera, 1975 November, featuring performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera,
La Traviata, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Signed on cast page. In
1993, soprano BEVERLY SILLS (1929-2007) became the first woman and
the first performing artist to become Chairman of the Lincoln Center for the
Performing Arts. She held the position until she stepped down in May 2002.
Sills, who debuted at the age of three as Bubbles Silverman on Uncle Bob's
Rainbow House radio show, performed with the New York City Opera from
1955 to 1980 and has sung in the world's leading opera houses. In addition
to the many awards for her albums, including a Grammy Award, Sills
received four Emmys for her weekly television program, Lifestyles with
Beverly Sills, and two Emmys for the BBC special, Profiles in
Music-Beverly Sills. Her autobiography, Bubbles: A Self-Portrait,
became a bestseller. She sang the part of Violetta Valery in this performance.
JOHN STEWART, who sang with the Whiffenpoofs and toured with the Concert
Orchestra while at Yale, has been a member of the New York City and Santa Fe
Opera Companies, while making guest appearances on many American and European
opera stages. In New York he sang the title role in Benjamin Britten's Albert
Herring. PABLO ELVIRA, JR., born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, began his
music career playing trumpet in his father's jazz orchestra, later forming his
own group. Pablo Casals encouraged him to turn his baritone voice to opera
singing. Elvira performed on stages around the world, joining New York's
Metropolitan Opera in 1978. He was particularly well known for his Figaro in
Rossini's The Barber of Seville. Fine condition.
