Stamp block signed: "Boris Petrov". 1p, 3½x2½. Commemorative USSR Postal stamp block translate: 16 January 1969 The First Experimental Space Station in the World was Created. Stamp features images offour Russian Cosmonauts: Vladimir Shatalov, Boris Volynov, Alexey Eliseev and Evgeniy Khrunov. Postmark dated 22 January 1969, Poskva Mail. Boris Nikolaevich Petrov (1913-1980) was a Soviet engineer and prominent figure in the USSR's space science community, best known for directing the Institute for Space Research (IKI) during the 1960s and 1970s. Under his leadership, IKI played a key role in the scientific planning and instrumentation of major Soviet space missions, including the Venera and Mars planetary probes. Petrov was instrumental in shaping Soviet space policy, particularly in advocating for peaceful uses of outer space through his work with the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). He supported international scientific collaboration during the Cold War and contributed to the integration of scientific objectives within the Soviet crewed space program, including the Soyuz and Salyut missions. Widely recognized for his achievements, Petrov received several of the USSR's highest honors, including the Lenin Prize and the title Hero of Socialist Labour. Fine condition.
