BOURKE B. HICKENLOOPER
His signature as US Senator, o letterhead of the Joint Atomic Energy Committee
(1950).
Typed Letter signed: "B. B. Hickenlooper" as US Senator, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1950 January 9. On letterhead of the US Congress Joint Committee on Atomic Energy to M. C. Watkins, Headland, Alabama. In full: "I have your letter of December 27, 1949 and note your request for an autographed photo. The only photographs I have at the present time are those with my autograph printed thereon, but it nevertheless is a true signature, and I am very happy to send you this picture. [Item not included. The featured letter has an original ink signature, of course.] Thank you for your very good wishes, and may you have a bright and happy New Year. Sincerely yours". Bourke Blakemore Hickenlooper (1896-1971) was Lieutenant Governor and then Governor (1943-1945) of Iowa before gaining election to the US Senate, where he served from 1945 to 1969. A very conservative Republican who headed the Republican Policy Committee (1962-1969), Hickenlooper often clashed with Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, whom Hickenlooper considered too willing to compromise with Democrats. The Hickenlooper Amendment (1962) prohibited the US from giving foreign aid to any country which expropriated American property. Hickenlooper served in the US Army in France during World War I. Lightly creased at edges. Horizontal mailing fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
