The Universal film mogul signs a typed letter to a fan, sending an autograph and asking him to give his opinions on recent Universal releases
Typed letter signed: "Carl Laemmle," 1p, 8½x11, Universal City, California, 1936 February 26. The President, and one of the founders in 1912, of Universal Pictures writes to Mrs. J. P. Newell, Portland, Oregon, a fan. In full: "Complying with your recent request, I am sending you enclosed my autograph. I am certain that you have quite a number of treats in store for you if you watch the coming of our future attractions. I suppose you have seen Magnificent Obsession, starring Irene Dunne and featuring Robert Taylor. Next Time We Love with Margaret Sullavan has been released for the last few weeks. Love Before Breakfast with Carole Lombard and Preston Foster is one of the most charming pictures I have ever seen. We have just completed Sutter's Gold and Show Boat is now in its last stages of production. In addition to this, there will be a steady flow of good Universal attractions to be presented to the public. I would be glad to receive your comments on these pictures soon after you have seen them." Carl Laemmle, Sr. (1867-1939), a German immigrant who started in Chicago building nickelodeons, busted the film "Trust" system by independently joining with others. He created the star system and founded Universal Pictures in 1912. Circa 1915, Laemmle built his Universal City on 230 acres in north Los Angeles, which became the first municipality devoted to the manufacture of films. Over the years he was known for producing quality films and stars. He took his company public on the NYSE in 1925 and sold his interest to a syndicate for $5.5 million in 1936.
