In full: "I return you the Denver letters, and also Mr. Spalding's, which I will look into at once. Mr. Spalding might be informed that Mr. Wilson has never played Sunday night in any theatres during his career. So as to be safe on the question of Sunday nights, it might be best to notify him that we will do all we can towards having our stars and attractions play Sunday nights; there are very few that have so far objected, as we have asked them personally to do so in St Louis." In 1893, CHARLES FROHMAN (1856-1915) and his friend AL HAYMAN built the Empire Theatre across Broadway from the Metropolitan Opera House. Frohman was responsible for the American premieres of many works, producing plays by such significant and durable playwrights as Oscar Wilde, Sir James Barrie and W. Somerset Maugham. Charles Frohman, known as "the Napoléon of the Drama", was at the height of his career when he died in the sinking of the Lusitania. Al Hayman had pointed out to his friend Frohman that the American Liner New York was also sailing on May 1st, at noon, and would arrive in Liverpool just one day later than the Lusitania and that actresses Ellen Terry and Isadora Duncan would be on the slower ship. Frohman answered jokingly, "Well, Al, if you want to write to me, just address the letter care of the German Submarine, U-4." Shaded. Creased with folds. Staple holes at upper left.
