In full: "As Salaam Alaikum:/Greetings from the/Muslims of Temple/#10 Atlantic City." Addressed by Malcolm X to: "Mr & Mrs Roy Manford (& Family)/338 Forest Street/Jersey City, N.J.". Postcard depicts "Steel Pier, Atlantic City, N.J." "As Salaam Alaikum" is the Muslim greeting meaning "Peace Be Unto You". Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, discovered the teachings of Elijah Muhammad while in prison. Upon his release in 1952, he traveled to Temple #10 in Chicago to hear Muhammad speak. Little changed his last name to "X", representing his unknown African ancestor's name, and became an organizer in the movement, establishing Temple Number 11 in Boston in 1954, the year before he wrote this letter.
