JOAN SUTHERLAND, RICHARD BONYNGE and HUGUETTE TOURANGEAU
A signed program for the 1974 San Francisco Opera
Program inscribed and signed: "To Janis/Best wishes/Joan Sutherland" and "To Janis/with good wishes/Richard Bonynge" and signed "Huguette Tourangeau" on inside cast page, 72p, 8¼x10¾. San Francisco, California, circa 1974. Program for the 52nd season of the San Francisco Opera. Signed on page for the First San Francisco Opera performance of Esclarmonde, the French opera in four acts by Jules Massenet. The opera was to be performed on October 23, 26 and 29 and on November 2 and 8. Sutherland starred in the title role and Tourangeau was Parséis. The orchestra was conducted by Bonynge. Australian coloratura soprano JOAN SUTHERLAND (born in 1926) is best known for singing heroine roles in Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti operas. Her repertoire includes Lucia Di Lammermoor, La Traviata, Julius Caesar, Norma and Tales of Hoffman. Named Dame of the British Empire in 1979, Sutherland won a Grammy Award in 1981. Australian-born RICHARD BONYNGE (born in 1930) has conducted orchestras all over the world, and he was the longtime accompanist for Sutherland, whom he married in 1954. Bonynge is also a recognized scholar of nearly forgotten operas. French Canadian mezzo-soprano HUGETTE TOURANGEAU (born in 1938) made her operatic debut in Ontario in 1964 and joined the Metropolitan's main company in 1973. She and Bonynge collaborated on a number of performances and recordings. Lightly creased. Front cover is chipped at left margin, nicked at blank left edge of back cover. Fine condition.
