Dave Prowse sends a typed letter sending some items to a collector.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dave Prowse", ¾p, 8x11¾. London, 1985 July 31. On letterhead of Dave Prowse Promotions Ltd. to Mr. Todd Axelrod, c/o The American Museum of Historical Documents, Las Vegas, Nevada. In full: "Many thanks for your letter which is now almost a year old! You can see, however, that I am still interested because I have kept the letter in front of me for the past 52 weeks. I keep meaning to write to you but until now have just never seemed to be able to put pen to paper in reply to your request. I am enclosing herewith some autographed photographs, together with two publications. The first is the book I wrote called Fitness is Fun, which is one part autobiography and 3 parts all about training, and as you will probably note, the photos are all of my wife and family illustrating the exercises. The other publication is a magazine I prepared for my Fan Club-The International Dave Prowse Fan Club-which really was an update on the book. I have additional copies of both should you require same and would be only too pleased to send them on to you. Both publications will give you a complete compilation of my career history and the handwritten letter enclosed will update it still further. I have been to the States many times, but so far, have never got to Las Vegas, although it's a place I've always wanted to have the experience of going to. They do have the occasional Science Fiction Convention there and I just hope either somebody invites me to address a convention or I get requested to give talks at the local university, colleges, or businessmen's clubs such as the Rotary, Lion's (sic) etc. I hope you find all of the enclosed of interest and I shall look forward to coming to the Museum as and when I get to Las Vegas." Enclosures not present. British actor Dave Prowse (1935-2020) first put on his Darth Vader costume for the original Star Wars film (1977). Chosen by George Lucas because of his imposing height (six feet, seven inches), Prowse was paid $12,000 for his role. Another $10,000 was paid to James Earl Jones, who voiced Vader due to Prowse's British accent (Prowse did not know his lines were being dubbed until he saw the film). The two actors reprised their parts in bringing Darth Vader to life in two Star Wars sequels: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Prowse, a former champion weight lifter, had previously appeared in Casino Royale (1967) before turning to horror films. He was also seen in A Clockwork Orange (1971) and Jabberwocky (1977), has appeared on several British TV shows and series and trained Christopher Reeve for his role in his first Superman movie (1978).
