DONNA AXUM
Short note signed by Donna Axum, Miss America 1964, with her "Best Wishes". Affixed to an album leaf with a short newspaper clipping on Axum. She was the first Miss Arkansas to earn the national Miss America title.
Autograph note signed"To George,/Best Wishes,/Donna Axum/ Miss America/1964" in blue ink. Blue ink notations on front and verso. 1 page, 3¾x5½, affixed to a 6¾x9¼ album leaf with rounded left edges. 1¾x6½ newspaper clipping on Axum affixed near right edge. Axum, born in 1942, was the first Miss Arkansas to be crowned Miss America. She reportedly entered beauty pageants to master a fear that she was too thin and didn't have a figure. She won her first beauty pageant, Miss Union County in 1958, while a senior in high school. Axum won the Miss Arkansas pageant in 1963 and then won the Miss America beauty contest in 1964. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, she hosted the TV show Noon in Austin, Texas in the 1970s and, from 1994 to 2001, was a member of the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. Axum is heavily involved in philanthropy, especially with her alma mater. She's also the author of two books: How to Be and Look Your Best Everyday: A Comprehensive Guide from a Former Miss America and The Outer You... The Inner You. Lightly toned and creased. Mounting residue and unrelated clippings affixed to verso; show-though touches body of note but not signature. Show-through from notations on verso (does not touch signature). Leaf was neatly torn from binding at right edge. Otherwise in fien condition.
