EILEEN SHERIDAN
The record-breaking cyclist offers fan "every good wish", signs name in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "With Every Good Wish/ Yours Sincerely/ Eileen Sheridan" in black ink. 1 page, 6x5½. 1952. Eileen Sheridan (b. 1924) is a retired British cyclist who specialized in time-trialing and road record breaking; she broke all the records of the Women's Road Records Association during the late 1940s and 1950s. She came to notice during her amateur career where the dainty 4'11" athlete won the British Best All-Rounder time trial competition in 1949 and 1950, and set records for 12-hour races, the 50 and 100 mile races, as well as the 30 mile; she was awarded the Bidlake Memorial Prize in 1950 for creating a new high standard in women's cycle racing. She turned professional when Hercules Cycle and Motor Company signed her in 1951 for three years to break distance and place-to-place records; she famously made the journey from Land's End to John o' Groats in 2 days, 11 hours and 7 minutes despite poor support from Hercules. She also set a record traveling from Land's End to London in 1952, but because of announcement from the Daily Mirror beforehand, her record was disallowed due to forbidden promotional publicity. Her autobiography Wonder Wheels: The autobiography of Eileen Sheridan (1956). Slightly toned. Light surface creases. Worn and slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
