ELMER WOGGON
Small card signed with "Best um wishes" to a "Paleface Pal" from cartoonist Elmer Woggon, signed as "Chief Wahoo Woggon". Woggon co-created the comic strip Big Chief Wahoo, later renamed Steve Roper.
Autograph note signed "Best um wishes/to Paleface Pal/GEORGE SANDERS/from Chief Wahoo/Woggon". Pencil notation in top right corner in unknown hand and typedcaption at bottom edge. 1¼x3¾ card. The typed caption on this card incorrectly identifies Woggon as "Ed Woggon". In 1936, Allen Sanders and ELMER WOGGON (1898-1978) created a humorous comic strip The Great Gusto, later renamed Big Chief Wahoo. Saunders wrote the dialogue; Woggon drew the art.Cartoonish, humor strips such as this one were going out of style, however, giving way to more realistic story-telling and drawing. Accordingly, a new character, journalist Steve Roper was added to the strip, gradually supplanting the original native American characters. Elmer Woggon's drawing was less well suited to the emerging photorealistic style, and he gradually ceded drawing responsibilities to other artists, including his brother Bill Woggon (1911-2003). In 1940, the strip was re-titled Steve Roper, devoted to solving crimes. Elmer ghosted as an artist in Steve Roper until 1954, but continued as the strip's researcher and letter. He was awarded an Inkpot Award at Comic-Con in 1978, the year of his death. Lightly toned and soiled. Light nick in right edge. Mounting remnants on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
