EUGENE LIST
The pianist signs the program for a classical recital sponsored by the Community Concert Association.
Program signed: "Eugene/List", in pencil, 2 pages (front and verso), 5½x8½. Undated solo recital of classic music sponsored by the Community Concert Association. Piano prodigy Eugene List (1918-1985) performed Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1929! His victory in a piano competition in Philadelphia earned him the right to play with its orchestra in 1934. Conductor Leopold Stokowski chose List to give the premiere performance of Shostakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 1", just arrived from Russia, with only 6 weeks preparation. List received rave reviews for this piece, which he would play later for many orchestras. While in the US Army in World War II, List performed several times for Truman, Churchill and Stalin at the Potsdam Conference (1945), with President Truman turning the pages for him on a Chopin piece he had not memorized. Now famous as "the Potsdam pianist," List even received a movie offer, appearing in The Bachelor's Daughter (1946). List married violin prodigy Carroll Glenn in 1943; they performed and taught together until her death in 1983. List's last performance at the White House was for President Carter in 1980. The program probably dates from the late 1930s, since it references his 1935 triumph in Philadelphia but not his wartime record. Creased and toned. Edges lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
