Autograph Note signed: "To George -/Thank you for a fun/time on the air. Monday/October 4, 1971/Gaylord Carter", 6¾x9¼. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned 5½x8½ flyer promoting a Carter concert and a new silent film with Carter's score: The Winning of Barbara Worth. Fine condition. As a youth, Gaylord Carter (1905-2000) was already providing piano accompaniment to silent movies in local theaters. Discovered by an agent for Harold Lloyd, he began playing the organ for silent films in the Grauman theaters. No scores were provided, so Carter composed his own. With the advent of talking pictures, demand for musical accompanists dried up, so Carter moved to radio, hosting his own show and providing music for The Whistler and Suspense. He later composed and performed the theme song for TV's Pinky Lee Show. Carter gave concerts and made recordings of his own. In the 1960s, he launched Flicker Fingers Productions to revive silent films, personally composing the music to go with them. With the advent of home video, demand for these silent movies grew, and some are now available on DVD. Carter gave his last concert at age 90.
