ADAMS EXPRESS: GEORGE J. SMITH
Bill of Lading for a shipment to Ohio Supreme Court Clerk Rodney Foos, signed by Smith as agent for the company
Document signed: "George J. Smith" for the company, 1 page, 8x5. Columbus, Ohio, 1872 January 2. Domestic Bill of Lading form of Adams Express Company. Unspecified delivery to Rodney Foos, Columbus, Ohio, with payment charged to a Pennsylvania company (name illegible). Marked "Paid" by Smith. Alvin Adams, a Worcester, Massachusetts merchant ruined in the Panic of 1837, started over with a package delivery service in 1839. By 1854, when his company was incorporated as Adams Express Company, the company was delivering packages all over New England, the Midwest and the South. (With the advent of the Civil War, Adams re-named his southern operations Southern Express, but secretly retained ownership. Adams Express proved so profitable that the company began acquiring stock of other companies, especially railroads, and was gradually transformed into an investment trust. Since 1929, Adams Express has been a closed-end fund on the NYSE (symbol ADX). No information is available on the Company's agent, George J. Smith, but Rodney Foos was Clerk of the Supreme Court of Ohio. Right edge trimmed unevenly. Horizontal fold crease. 1" vertical tear 2½" from top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
