ropes, signed with Jake's reminder, "Ray, I never went down"
Photograph signed: "Ray, I never went down./ Jake La Motta/ Raging Bull" B/w, 16x20.
Nicknamed the "Bronx Bull" because of his aggressive, charging style, Jake LaMotta
(1921-2017) reached prominence when he won a 10-round decision over Sugar Ray Robinson
on February 5, 1943. He and Robinson fought six times, with LaMotta winning only that
one bout. On June 16, 1949, LaMotta won the world middleweight championship. He
defended his title twice but lost it when Robinson knocked him out in the 13th round on
February 14, 1951 (despite La Motta's claim here that he never went down). LaMotta won
83 fights, 30 by knockout, and lost 19, four by knockout (with four draws). He
co-authored his autobiography, Raging Bull, which was adapted as a 1981 movie starring
Robert DeNiro. LaMotta was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in
1990. Fine condition.
