JOHN S. KNIGHT
Typed letter signed by the newspaper baron who founded the Knight-Ridder chain
Typed Letter signed: "John S Knight", 1p, 8½x11. Akron, Ohio, 1968 November 25. On
letterhead of Akron Beacon Journal to Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "In response
to your request of November 20, I am enclosing an autographed photograph [not included].
Thank you also for your complimentary references. Sincerely". John S. Knight (1894-1981)
inherited the Akron Beacon Journal from his father in 1933. By the time of his death, his
Knight-Ridder Newspapers, Inc. owned 32 papers in 17 states with 3.6 million readers. In
contrast to rival William Randolph Hearst's philosophy of centralized management, Knight
preferred to allow his papers much autonomy so that they could retain their regional flavor.
His papers won 26 Pulitzer Prizes during his lifetime, including on for his own "Editor's
Notebook" column (1968). Knight raised thoroughbred horses and was a top-flight amateur
golfer. Light corner creases. Paperclip impression at top center. Otherwise, fine condition.
