Joseph Stanley Pennell (1903-1963) was an American author who was born in Junction City, Kansas. Educated at Kansas University for a time, Pennell was later accepted Oxford University and studied there for a few years. A subject that always interested him, even after studying British literature overseas, was the American Civil War.Many members of Pennell's family served in the war on one side or the other. He took it upon himself to learn as much as he could about the war and his ancestors. Between working as a journalist and serving in the United States Army, Pennell wrote a novel titled The History of Rome Hanks and Kindred Matters, which was eventually seen and published by famous editor Maxwell Perkins. Published in 1944, the book was a semi-autobiographical telling of a man who weeded through family and historical accounts of the Civil War to understand the impact the war had on the United States. The book was a national best-seller. Light wear and mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
