Photograph signed: "Lee Scherer/ Director/ Kennedy Space Center" in black felt tip. B/w, 8x10. Lee R. Scherer (1919-2011) was an American aeronautical engineer best known for directing NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center from 1975 to 1979. After earning a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a professional degree in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1950, Scherer worked many Navy and government jobs. Notably he worked as special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Navy for research and development of ballistic missile nuclear submarines were developed (1956-1959), and eventually as a technical assistant to the team responsible for the establishment of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Research Center for NATO (1959-1962). In 1962 he was assigned by the Navy to NASA Headquarters where he was a program manager for Lunar Orbiter, an unmanned spacecraft that photographed the Moon from low lunar orbit to provide data for the selection of Apollo landing sites. After this, in 1964, Scherer retired from the Navy and remained at NASA as director of lunar programs for the Office of Space sciences; from 1967 6o 1971 he was director of the Apollo Lunar Exploration Office, responsible for scientific aspects of lunar exploration, a position he held during the first five lunar missions. He was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1967, the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 9169, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1974. Ink stamps on verso.
