The Republican Senator signed this handwritten note during the Impeachment
trial of President Johnson.
Autograph Note signed: "E. D. Morgan " as U.S. Senator, 1 page,
4½x6¾. Washington, 1868 March 19. To "Sir", in full: "As
requested in your note of 14th instant I send you my autograph. Very truly".
Republican Morgan (1811-1883)was Governor of New York from
1859-1862, serving as Major General of Volunteers from 1861-1863. He served
one term as a U.S. Senator (1863-1869), and chaired the Republican
National Committee during President Lincoln's successful bid for
re-election. Morgan signed this note while the Senate was hearing the
charges brought by the House of Representatives against President Andrew
Johnson, the trial having begun on March 5, 1868. When the votes were cast on
May 16 and May 26, Senator Morgan voted "guilty" on all articles, but the
measure failed by one vote (35-19) to receive the two-thirds necessary remove
the President from office. Morgan was offered the post of Secretary of the
Treasury by President Arthur in 1881, but declined. He was influential in the
world of business as well as politics, being one of the founders of Wells -
Fargo Express and a director of American Express. Faint mounting adhesive
remnants at corners. One-fourth inch tear at left of upper edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
