MARC CHAGALL
The artist's Boris Godounov section of the ceiling for the Paris Opera House.
Printed Image signed: "Marc/Chagall" in black crayon. Color, 19x12¾. Page from a book. Printed on verso are a study titled "Berlioz" and text (in French, not translated) relating to Russian composer Modest Moussorgsky and his opera Boris Godounov, the subjects of this section of the ceiling. In 1963, 77-year-old Russian-born French artist MARC CHAGALL was commissioned by André Malraux to paint the domed ceiling of Paris' Theatre National de l'Opera. The massive work, an oil on glued canvas, featured sections dedicated to composers and their works. The ceiling was dedicated on September 23, 1964, and the work proved so popular that Chagall received commissions for two large murals for New York's Metropolitan Opera House. MODEST PETROVICH MUSSORGSKY (1839-1881) premiered the original Boris Godounov, an opera with a prologue and four acts, in 1869; it was revised in 1872. Composer HECTOR BERLIOZ was considered "The Father of French Romanticism". Mid-vertical fold. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 26½ x 28. Vero of image visible from back of frame.
