Signatures: "MA Hanna/Ohio" and on verso "Joseph D. Sayers/Dec 27 1898 Texas", 6½x2. MARCUS A. HANNA (1837-1904) was a wealthy Ohio businessman and political power broker. He was a reluctant supporter of Theodore Roosevelt as President William McKinley's running mate in 1900. Roosevelt had stood for much of what Hanna was against. The Republican political boss had successfully supported McKinley for Governor of Ohio in 1891 and 1893 and for President in 1896 and 1900. He was innovative in the area of campaign financing and became a trusted advisor to McKinley during his presidency. Upon hearing of McKinley's death, it was Hanna who said: "That damn cowboy is now President of the United States." Hanna represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 1897 to his death in 1904, when he was at the height of his political power. His funeral services were held in the Chamber of the United States Senate. After attending Bastrop Military Institute, JOSEPH D. SAYERS (1841-1929) joined the Fifth Regiment, Mounted Volunteers, Confederate Army in 1861, reaching the rank of Major in 1864. He later served as a Democratic Congressman from Texas from 1885 to 1899 and was Governor of Texas from 1899 to 1903. Ink notes (unknown hand) on both sides (not affecting signatures).
