MARTHA RAYE
Signed b/w movie still from $1,000 A Touchdown, with Raye in a dress, high heels and an old-school leather football cap raising her hands for a pass
Photograph signed "Bless you/Martha/Raye". With pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 7¾x10 overall, 7¼x8 image, one surface. Movie still from the film $1,000 A Touchdown (1939), ©1939, Paramount Pictures, Inc. In this slapstick comedy, Joe E.Brown and Raye play a show business couple who inherit a near-bankrupt college. They decide to build up the school's scraggly football team in hopes of improving alumni funding; somewhere along the line it is agreed to grant one thousand dollars for every touchdown scored. Singer, actress and comedienne Raye (1916-1994, born in Butte, Montana) made her Broadway debut in 1934 and her first film in 1936. She had her own TV show (1953-1954) and many guest appearances. A tireless performer for American troops in three wars, billing herself as "Colonel Maggie", she was honored with the Academy of Motion Pictures' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1968) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1993). She was buried in the military cemetery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Lightly toned and creased. Worn and rounded corners. Tear on right edge. Pencil notes on verso lightly show through to upper left corner (barely evident head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
