MATTHEW VASSAR, JR.
Handwritten sentiment by the nephew and namesake of the founding benefactor of Vassar College. Vassar Jr. was himself the College's first Treasurer.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours respectfully/M. Vassar Jr", 3½x1½. Unrelated postal cancellation on verso. Matthew Vassar (1792-1868) and his brother John Guy Vassar founded a brewery in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1810. The brothers named their sons after each other. Despite a devastating fire which claimed John Guy's life, the Vassar brewery became highly successful. Matthew Vassar, Jr. (1808-1881), John Guy Vassar's son, joined and expanded the family business. Father and son both actively engaged in local philanthropies, the most lasting and significant of which was the founding of Vassar College, which opened its doors as one of America's first women's colleges in 1865. Matthew Vassar, Jr., was the College's first Treasurer, managing its finances and endowments (originally mostly from his father and himself) until his own death. (Uncle Matthew had died while reading his farewell speech to the College Trustees.) Vassar College, one of the elite "Seven Sisters" women's colleges, co-educational since 1969, is among America's most respected institutions of higher learning. Irregularly cropped edges. Toned. Small tear in right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
