MEYER LEVIN
The author, long involved in litigation over the dramatization of Anne Frank's diary, signs a handwritten note to an interviewer.
Autograph Note signed: "For Terry/One of the first interviewers/who gets to the core/Sincerely/Meyer Levin/1978", 4½x3 paper. Sheet printed with the title of one of Levin's books (The Spell of Time, 1974). Meyer Levin (1905-1981) received a Special Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for his "non-fiction novel," Compulsion (1956), a writing genre later followed by authors like Truman Capote and Norman Mailer. It was the eighth of his 16 novels. Levin was one of the first to learn of Anne Frank's diary, and he reviewed it for the New York Times. Levin later wrote a play based on Anne Frank's diary, but it was not produced. He later sued Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, authors of the successful The Diary of Anne Frank, for plagiarism. Levin won his suit, but settled for a smaller settlement to forestall an appeal. More litigation followed, related to other literary accounts derived from Anne Frank's tragedy. Levin wrote a non-fiction book, Obsession, describing his continued involvement in this controversy. Irregularly cut edges. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
