NICOLAS ROMANOS
AFTRA membership application signed by actor Nicolas Romanos in 1957
Document signed "Nicolas Romanos" in blue ink. Blue and purple ink notations in unknown hand and, on verso, red ink stamp. 2 pages, 6¼x8¾, 1 sheet, front and verso. With 6½x3¼ initiation fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at top edge. Sept. 30, 1957. Membership form for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. According to this document, Nicolas was an actor who was scheduled to appear in a 1957 episode of You Bet Your Life. You Bet Your Life was an odd duck (ha!) amongst game shows. The prizes weren't huge - at least, not at first - but the combination of the Marx Brothers' Groucho Marx, announcer/guinea pig George Fenneman, easy questions like "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?", interesting instead of glamorous contestants, easy banter and the Secret Word (awarded by a duck that could have been a long-lost brother of Groucho) kept the show on the air for two decades. The show got its start on radio in 1947, moved to TV in 1950 and ran until 1961. You Bet Your Life was nominated for six Emmy Awards, including one for Best Comedy Show. Lightly toned and creased. Receipt has carbon copy marks and was folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
