Extremely rare signatures from seven 20th century classical music
figures, including conductor and composer Ossip Gabriolowitsch, director Beryl
Rubinstein, and composer Vladmir Bakaleinikoff!
Inscribed autograph musical quotation signed: "To Mrs. Huntington
with grateful appreciation/of her wonderful hospitality/Ossip
Gabriolowitsch/Nov. 11th 1929." and, on verso, "Vladimir
Bakaleinikoff", "Victor de Gomez", "Beryl
Rubinstein/Cleveland", "André de Ribanpierre", "Elsa
Lesery" and "Edith Rhetts - Detroit Mich.", 9½x6¼
album leaf. Dated (unknown hand): "1928-1929" at upper margin of
both sides. Beneath his signature, Gabriolowitsch has drawn two bars of
music, identifying it as "Beethoven's Fifth Symphony". Pianist and
conductor OSSIP GABRILOWITSCH (1878-1936) was born in St.
Petersburg, Russia and studied piano with Anton Rubenstein and Theodor
Leschetizky. After a solo career in Europe and America, he was the conductor
of the Detroit Symphony from 1918-1936. Noted for his elegant and subtle
techniques, he is best remembered as a matinee-idol pianist. From 1909
until his death in 1936, Gabriolowitsch was married to Clara Clemens
(1874-1962), the daughter of author Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain); the
couple had one daughter, Nina. Violinist, composer and conductor VLADIMIR
BAKALEINIKOFF (1885-1953) conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
and was the associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His
brother, Mischa, was a composer, and another brother, Constantin, was Music
Director at RKO Pictures. Pianist and composer BERYL RUBINSTEIN
(1898-1952) was Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music for
twenty years (1932 until his death 1952). EDITH RHETTS (1888-1965), a
lecturer on the Chautauqua Circuit, gave pre-symphonic lectures before
performances of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. ANDRÉ DE RIBAUPIERRE
(1893-1955) was a Swiss violinist and musical educator, teaching at the
Conservatory of Lausanne, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Eastman School
of Music. VICTOR DE GOMEZ (1891-1969) was a principal cellist for the
Philadelphia Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra. Heavily toned. Right edge
creased, notched, and frayed. Light surface creases. Edges slightly worn and
dented. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
