To Peter Hanson, New York, N. Y. In full: "Dear Mr. Hanson: Much as I would like to accommodate you regarding negatives of the photographs used in the book on Clark Gable. I'm sorry I shall have to disappoint you. The original pictures are quite large and were cut down so there were obviously new negatives made. However, I have no idea who made them or where they may be found. I had very little contact with Gabe Esso. He interviewed me and I loaned him the photographs, which he returned after using them. I have no idea of Mr. Esso's whereabouts. I suggest you get in touch with the publishers of the book who can in turn help you locate the author. I am sure Mr. Esso will be able to help you more so than I. Nancy Carroll was a fine and lovely person and I regret I cannot do more in her memory. Sincerely. P.S. It has been brought to my attention that Mr. Esso did a piece on Westerns for a magazine section called "West". That might be another source where you could track him down ". Ink note: "In the Los Angeles Time." NANCY CARROLL (1903-1965) appeared in Broadway musicals of the 1920s, making her film debut in the late silent era. Easy Come, Easy Go (1928) made her a star, and she went on to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination for The Devil's Holiday (1930). Her musical talent made her a natural for Paramount film musicals of the 1930s, including four in which she co-starred with Charles "Buddy" Rogers. However, Carroll was selective about her roles, earning her the label of "difficult" in the studio era. Paramount dropped her contract, despite her large fan base, and she retired from film in 1938 after four more movies for Columbia. She returned to the stage, and co-starred in two early TV series (The Aldrich Family. 1950; The Egg and I (1951). Paul Fix (1901-1983) appeared in dozens of Westerns in the 1930s, largely playing characters that were villainous or untrustworthy. From 1933-1973, he appeared in 24 films with John Wayne, whom he had befriended in the mid-1930s. His most familiar role was as North Fork's honest, but often ineffectual Marshall Micah Torrance on the TV series The Rifleman, which was televised on ABC from 1958-1963. Two items.
