PETER SCHICKELE ("P. D. Q. BACH")
TLS discussing modern premiere of P. D. Q. Bach's "Howdy Symphony"
Typed Letter signed: "Prof Peter Schickele", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., no date. To Earl Collins, Austin, Texas. In full: "Thanks for your letter; I assume you refer to my activities involving the alleged music of P. D. Q. Bach, so I'm sending a reduced but complete score of the first six measures of the 'HOWDY SYMPHONY,' which was given its first performance in modern times last December in Carnegie Hall, and which will undoubtedly turn up on one of the P. D. Q. Bach albums. It should perhaps be pointed out that the 'HOWDY SYMPHONY' begins with nobody on the stage but the conductor. Keep the faith, sir. [signature] P. S. Sorry about the pencil, but that's all I work in these days". [This TLS is signed in ink. The pencil reference is to an autograph musical quotation not included here.] Music satirist Peter Schickele (1935-2024) composes and performs the music of  "P. D. Q. Bach," supposedly a member of the musical family which included Johann Sebastian Bach. Schickele, who calls P. D. Q. a "manic plagiarist," spoofs every musical genre, using instruments like the kazoo not frequently found in classical orchestras, and giving his works names like "Concerto for Horn and Hardart, "Music for an Awful lot of Winds and Percussion" and "Fanfare for the Common Cold." He tours regularly, and has issued many album compilations. Fine condition.
