Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours faithfully/Ian Mac Laren/Dec. 1896", 4¼x2¾. Captioned newspaper illustration affixed at left edge. Ian MacLaren (1850-1907) was the pen name of Scottish author and Presbyterian minister Rev. John Watson. After pastoral duties in Edinburgh, Perthshire and Glasgow, he served in Liverpool, England from 1880 until his 1905 retirement. He was Lyman Beecher lecturer at Yale (1900), and moderator of the English Presbyterian Church (1900). He died from complications of tonsillitis while visiting the US. While publishing sermons as John Watson, he wrote many popular works of fiction based on Scottish life, including Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush and The Days of Auld Lang Syne. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Surface creases. Lightly soiled on bottom left corner near affixed image. Otherwise, fine condition.
