ROGERS HORNSBY

Inscribed photo of a young Hornsby in suit and hat, mounted on 10x12 cardboard

Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Cullen Cain/Very Sincerel/Rogers Hornsby". Sepia 7½x10 image mounted on 10x12 cardboard. Rogers Hornsby's (1896-1963) career batting average of .358 is second only to Ty Cobb, and his .424 in 1924 is a record for the 20th century. "The Magnificent Rajah" won six straight batting titles (1920-1925), two Triple Crowns and two MVPs, but Hornsby alienated almost everyone sooner or later. St. Louis traded him to New York after he had player-managed them to a 1926 world championship. The Giants traded Hornsby to Boston in 1927 after he hit .361. And, he led the league in batting in 1928, but the Braves traded him to the Cubs. Hornsby is one of only 4 players to win a "decade triple crown" (most homers, highest average, and most runs batted in over that span). The other three are Honus Wagner, Ted Williams and Albert Pujols, very select company indeed! Hornsby was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942. Image creased with minor surface scratches. Edges creased with surface damage at top edge. Corners lightly creased and chipped. Signature light but legible. Otherwise fine condition.  Mount ragged and chipping. Corners chipped and torn away.
