SARGENT SHRIVER
Typed letter signed as Democratic Vice Presidential nominee
Typed Letter Signed: "Sargent Shriver", 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1972 August 22. To A. Nelson Taylor, Yorkshire, England. In full: "Thank you for your kind letter of congratulations. I was delighted to hear from you. This is going to be a vigorous contest, and your encouragement gives us the impetus we need to win." Missouri Senator Thomas F. Eagleton was South Dakota Senator George McGovern's choice for Vice President and the McGovern-Eagleton ticket was nominated at the July 10-13, 1972 Democratic National Convention. Public pressure forced Eagleton to announce his withdrawal from the ticket on July 31, 1972. At issue was the revelation of his receiving psychological treatment during the 1960s. On August 8th, R. Sargent Shriver (1915-2011), the former head of the Peace Corps and President Kennedy's brother-in-law, succeeded him on the ticket. Nixon-Agnew defeated McGovern-Shriver in the November 7, 1972 election in a landslide, with the incumbent Republicans winning 49 states. Lightly creased. Stray ink marks at mid-right portion. Fine condition.
