SEAN O'CASEY. Book inscribed and signed: "To Jack Daly./with all the old affection of an his/old [illegible]/Sean O'Casey/'Them was days, them was days!'/Devon. 1940." on first blank flyleaf. The Irish dramatist's play, The Star Turns Red, 200p, 5¼x8. London, Macmillan & Co. Ltd: 1940. First Edition. Dedicated "TO THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO FOUGHT THROUGH THE GREAT DUBLIN LOCKOUT IN NINETEEN HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN", this play is one of several works that O'Casey, who lived in England from 1926, wrote on social and political themes. In 1913, Dublin transport workers had been locked out of their jobs in an attempt to starve them into submission and break the newly formed Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU). O'Casey had won acclaim -- and criticism -- for his early Dublin trilogy, The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1924) and The Plough and the Stars (1926), which was set during the 1916 Easter Rising. Cover is lightly worn. Tackhead-size stain at lower edge of front cover. Signature page and some inside pages lightly shaded. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on inside front cover. Book is internally sound.
