Avery Schreiber (April 9, 1935 – January 7, 2002) was an American comedian and actor, known for his distinctive bushy mustache and his broad comedic talent. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Schreiber made his mark in both television and stage throughout his career.
Schreiber initially garnered attention as one half of the comedy duo "Burns and Schreiber," alongside Jack Burns. Their dynamic interplay and comedic sketches became a staple of variety shows in the 1960s and 1970s. Their unique chemistry led to their own short-lived variety series, "The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour," in 1973.
Beyond his partnership with Burns, Schreiber had a diverse acting career. He made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows including "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Chico and the Man," and "Fantasy Island." Perhaps more widely recognized by the general public were his numerous commercials for Doritos throughout the 1970s, where his comedic flair was on full display. In addition to his television roles, Schreiber was an accomplished stage actor. He performed in several theatrical productions, showcasing his ability to handle both comedic and dramatic roles with equal finesse.
Later in his career, Schreiber transitioned into voice acting, lending his voice to animated series such as "Batman: The Animated Series" and the children’s show "Rugrats." His versatile talent ensured he remained a constant presence in various facets of entertainment.
