CANDICE BERGEN
Born: May 09, 1946 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California
Candice Bergen, an American actress and former fashion model, was born on May 9, 1946, in Beverly Hills, California. Renowned for her depth and versatility in acting, she has enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades, marked by prominent roles in both film and television.
The daughter of famed ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, Candice Bergen started her career as a model before transitioning into acting. Her breakthrough came in 1966 with the film "The Sand Pebbles," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Bergen's film career flourished in the 1970s, with significant roles in "Carnal Knowledge" (1971), "The Wind and the Lion" (1975), and "Starting Over" (1979), the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
However, Bergen is perhaps best known for her role as the title character in the CBS sitcom "Murphy Brown," which ran from 1988 to 1998. Her portrayal of the sharp-tongued, independent television journalist won her five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. After "Murphy Brown," Bergen continued her television work with roles in "Boston Legal" and "House," and reprised her role as Murphy Brown in a 2018 revival of the show. She also remained active in film, with parts in "Miss Congeniality" (2000) and "Book Club" (2018). In addition to her acting career, Bergen is an accomplished photojournalist and an advocate for women's rights. She authored an autobiography, "Knock Wood," in 1984.
