Died: July 21, 2015 in New York City, New York
Biography
Edgar Lawrence Doctorow (1931-2015), was a novelist known for his creative manipulation of traditional genres. His novel Ragtime revisits the Ragtime era, and features racy wit, impressive historical accuracy, and nostalgic elements. Doctorow has described the work as "fictive nonfiction". The film version of the story is divided into four parts, just as ragtime music is structured. It follows three different characters in search of their share of the American dream. It was released as a musical in 1981 and was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Harold Rollins, Jr.), Best Supporting Actress (Elizabeth McGovern), Best Score, Best Song, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography. The Broadway version (January 1998-January 2000) won two Tony Awards and was nominated for Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical (Peter Friedman).
