Gene Tenace was born on October 10, 1946, in Russellton, Pennsylvania and he is a former professional baseball player best known for his role as a catcher and first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played from 1969 to 1983, primarily with the Oakland Athletics and later with the San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Tenace made his MLB debut with the Oakland Athletics on May 29, 1969. He gained national attention during the 1972 World Series when he hit four home runs and drove in nine runs, earning the World Series Most Valuable Player Award. His performance helped lead the Athletics to their first of three consecutive championships (1972–1974). He was also a key contributor during Oakland’s postseason runs, known for his ability to draw walks and hit for power.

In 1977, Tenace signed with the San Diego Padres as a free agent. He later spent brief stints with the St. Louis Cardinals (1981–1982) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1983) before retiring as a player. Over the course of his career, Tenace appeared in 1,555 MLB games, compiling a .241 batting average, 201 home runs, and 674 runs batted in. After retiring as a player, Tenace worked as a coach at the major league level, including roles with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he was part of the coaching staff during their back-to-back World Series championships in 1992 and 1993.
