Biography
Mikhail Gorbachev (b.1931) was the last General Secretary of the Communist Party of the U.S.S.R. and the last Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (1985-1991). He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his efforts to bring the Cold War to an end. His efforts were also noted by "Time" magazine, which named him its "Man of the Year" in 1987 and "Man of the Decade" (for the 1980s). The Soviet Union officially dissolved on December 26, 1991, the day after Gorbachev resigned.
