Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Ed/Best Wishes/Stuart Erwin/1939". B/w, 8x10. Name and "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer" imprinted in white at lower left. In 1939, Erwin appeared in four feature films: Back Door to Heaven, It Could Happen to You, Hollywood Cavalcade and The Honeymoon's Over. Stuart "Stu" Erwin (1903-1967) is an actor best known for Trouble With Father, later called The Stu Erwin Show (1950-1955). The sitcom co-starred Erwin's wife, actress June Collyer, to whom he was married from July 22, 1931 until his death on December 21, 1967. The couple acted together for 20 years before their television outing. Erwin, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Pigskin Parade (1936), made his film debut in 1928 in Mother Knows Best. His other film credits include The Band Plays On (1934), I'll Take Romance (1937), Our Town (1940), and Son of Flubber (1963). Erwin, who debuted on Broadway in 1942, was also seen frequently on the small screen. In addition to another series, The Greatest Show on Earth (1963-1964), he made several television movies and appeared as a guest star on shows like Crossroads (1957) to Gentle Ben (1967). Lightly creased and soiled at blank margins and corners. Minor surface creases and scratches (most not evident head on). Defects from original negative have reproduced at background. Tape remnants on verso, which is lightly soiled (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
