Show Bill signed: "Tom Courtenay", "Paul Rogers", "Jerome Collamore", "Lisabeth/Bartlett", "Rachel Gurney", 130 pages, 5½x9. Playbill for a production of The Dresser at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre (New York), Opening Night November 9, 1981. The Dresser, a play by Ronald Harwood ran for 200 performances in New York after a successful London premiere. Tom Courtenay was nominated for a Tony, Paul Rogers for a Drama Desk Award, for their performances. English actor TOM COURTENAY (b. 1937) debuted with the Old Vic company in 1960. In 1961, he assumed the title role in Billy Liar from Albert Finney, reprising it in the 1963 film. Courtenay's memorable film roles include rebellious Colin Smith in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), Pasha Antipov in Doctor Zhivago (1965), and the film version of The Dresser. Courtenay was nominated for acting Oscars for his roles in Doctor Zhivago and The Dresser, fors Tonys for his roles in Otherwise Engaged (1977) and the play offered here. He was knighted in 2001. RACHEL GURNEY (1920-2001), a British actress is probably best known as Lady Marjorie Bellamy in the British TV show Upstairs Downstairs. (She reportedly said of her role, "I would have much rather played one of the servants. They were much nicer people.") She got her start on the West End stage. Her roles there included starring opposite Alec Clunes in Carrington VC (1953) and as Portia in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (1955). PAUL ROGERS (1917-2013), also English, was making the last of nine Broadway appearances in The Dresser. His first four had been Shakespearean roles, including the title role in Macbeth (1956-1957). After earning a Tony nomination for Photo Finish (1963), he won as Best Actor in a Play for The Homecoming (1967). JEROME COLLAMORE (1891-1987) was making the last of his 14 Broadway performances here, concluding a list of credits which stretched back to Hamlet in 1918. LISABETH BARTLETT (b. 1956) would make one more Broadway appearance after this one, with multiple roles in Execution of Justice (1986). She can be seen briefly in the film Amadeus (1984), performing on stage in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Slightly worn at binding. Otherwise, fine condition.
