THOMAS McCALL. TLS: "Tom McCall" as Governor of Oregon, 1p, 7¼x10½. Salem, Oregon, 1974 September 11. On letterhead of Office of the Governor to Mr. E.P. McKean-Smith, Coos Bay, Oregon. In full: "Many thanks for your nice letter - I'm sorry you couldn't make it for that chat. Lots of luck during your retirement. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to avoid retirement!" On January 14, 1975, four months after he signed this letter, McCall would "retire" from his job as Oregon's Governor. Republican Thomas Lawson McCall (1913-1983) was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Congress from Oregon in 1954 before serving as Oregon's Secretary of State (1965-1967) and Governor of Oregon (1967-1975). He is perhaps best known for his 1971 quote in which he implored people not to move to the state. Before beginning his political career, McCall, who had a journalism degree, worked for "The Oregonian" newspaper and was a radio news announcer. During WWII, while serving in the U.S. Navy, he was a war correspondent in the Pacific. Returning home, McCall had a nightly radio talk show. After leaving office, McCall became a television news analyst and ran again for Governor in 1978, but was defeated in the primary. Slightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
