Typed Letter signed: "Wm E. Chandler". 1p, 8x10. Washington, D.C., 1993 June 29. On letterhead of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission, William E. Chandler, President. To Col W. H. D. Cochrane, Nashua, New Hampshire, in full: "I regret to find that I cannot be present at the Nashua semi-centennial celebration. I thank the Mayor and yourself and the other members of the Committee for their thoughtful invitation. Yours very truly". William Eaton Chandler (1835-1917) was reporter for the New Hampshire Supreme Court before being appointed to federal positions by President Lincoln, including, in 1865, that of Solicitor and Judge Advocate General of the Navy. After a stint as a newspaper editor, Chandler was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Arthur (1882-1885). He was elected as a Republican to the US Senate (1887-1901), and concluded his public career as President McKinley's appointee to preside over the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission (1901-1907). Normal vertical and horizontal mailing folds. Stained at edges, corners and folds. Creased at corners and edges.
