The former President of the Fenian Society notes the dates of his
elections to Congress
Autograph Note signed: "Twice elected: in 1870 &/ 1872/William
R. Roberts", 4¼x2¾ affixed to 7¼x4¼ sheet with ink caption (unknown hand),
including date: May 4th 1873. William R. Roberts (1830-1897) emigrated
from Ireland in 1849, becoming a New York City merchant. In 1865, he became
President of the Fenian Society, an Irish nationalist organization which
staged raids into Canada. Roberts was arrested by US authorities after one
such raid. A Democrat, Roberts served two terms in the US House of
Representatives (1871-1875) and later served as a New York City alderman
(1877). President Cleveland appointed him ambassador to Chile
(1885-1889). Sheet irregularly cut. Light surface creases. Signature lightly
soiled. Fine condition.
