Influential Russian poet offers fan "best wishes", signs name in black ink

Printed Card Signed in Ink: "with best wishes/ Yevtushenko" in black felt tip. 5x7 unused postcard with biography of poet Stephen Vincent Benet. Soviet and Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko (b. 1932) has been writing poems, novels, essays, dramas and scripts, as well as has worked in the film industry for over fifty years. As a spokesman for the younger post-Stalin generation of Russian poets, Yevtushenko internationally publicized demands to the Soviet government for greater artistic freedom and for a literature based on aesthetic rather than political standards, leading to the easing of Soviet control over artists in the late 1950s and 60s. He traveled extensively through Europe and the United States, establishing cultural links in the West, but eventually fell into disfavor when he published Precocious Autobiography (1963). However, Yevtushenko was restored back into favor when he published Bratsk Station (1966) which he describes the contrasting symbols of Siberia as a prison and as an industrialized power. He decided to become an actor in 1978, and appeared in movies such as Soy Cuba (1964), Vzlyot (1979), and Pokhorony Stalina (1990). His other writing publications include the play Under the Skin of the Statue of Liberty (1972), the novel Wild Berries (1984), The Collected Poems (1952) and the autobiography Don't Die Before Your Death (1994).
