ALBERT S. ROGELL
After finishing The Black Cat, he replies to a complimentary note, pleased that people are starting to notice movie directors. He adds a second signature as an autograph.
Typed Letter signed twice: "Albert S. Rogell", 1 page, 8½x11. Universal City, California, 1941 April 14. On letterhead of Universal Pictures Company to John Meyers, Jr., Baltimore, Maryland. A second signature has been added a lower edge, apparently in response for an autograph request. In full: "Your nice note of February 11th received and the long delay in answering has only been due to the fact that I have been so busy, having finished THE BLACK CAT and since then a picture entitled TIGHT SHOES, which is from a story by the same name by Damon Runyon. I am starting next Monday on another picture entitled RHAPSODY IN STRIPES, a prison musical. It is most gratifying to find that people are starting to realize that the directors of motion pictures are also personalities. Thanks for your letter and I hope to hear from you again. Sincerely". Albert S. Rogell (1901-1988) was a director from the early 1920s, specializing in B Westerns and adventure films. He directed some strong casts, however. The Black Cat, based on a story by Edgar Allen Poe, featured Basil Rathbone, Bela Lugosi and Alan Ladd. Tight Shoes offered names like Binnie Barnes, Leo Carillo and Shemp Howard. Rhapsody in Stripes, re-titled Jail House Blues, appeared as promised. In the 1950s, Rogell moved to television, where his directing efforts included six episodes of Broken Arrow (1957). Minor notches at left edge. Lightly toned around edges. Corners lightly worn. Horizontal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
