MARY MARGARET McBRIDE
Typed letter from the "First Lady of Radio" to a fan, thanking them for enjoying her program and wishing them good luck with their autograph collection. Signed twice in red pencil, extremely rare!
Typed letter twice signed: "MMM", "Mary Margaret McBride", in red pencil, 5½x3¼. In full: "Dear Frank Sherrill, I love hearing from you and knowing that you like my program - you can't think how much that means to me. Thank you for your letter and good luck with the collection; I feel mighty proud. Sincerely". Mary Margaret McBride (1899-1976) originally started her career as an editor and reporter but became better known as a radio host and interviewer, having her radio programs broadcast for 40 years. Most popular during her time with NBC, McBride brought in viewers by her tradition of not announcing guests beforehand, although she had remarkable guests like Joe DiMaggio, Zora Neale Hurtson, Tennessee Williams, Governor Thomas E. Dewey, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Continuing to broadcast late into her life from a seat in her living, McBride was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following her death in 1976. Corners lightly worn and creased. Ink stamps. Slightly soiled on verso. Fine condition.
